Yet his career, which he loved so much was soon to be cut short.  In 1998, after just having been promoted as fulltime news cast director, he did succumb to his heart condition and had to be admitted  to a Norfolk hospital to await a heart transplant. During this time, tied to an IV pump and heart monitor, Jeff continued to remain as active as he could.

 

 

 While waiting, he was able to completely rebuild his own computer, along with helping other patients with theirs. One of his fellow patients wrote,

 

Jeff had bad days just like all of us who waited so long.  Yet he seemed to handle those days much better.  All the residents, nurses and doctors admired his abilities and example. “
